Cross Sectional Anatomy – Occasional module ONLINE– ONE SEMESTER

Cross sectional imaging is increasingly being used within the health sector.  There is an onus on all health professionals who use it to have a comprehensive knowledge of normal anatomy.

Course Features

This is a fully online module using online lectures, videos and electronic resources, thus allowing flexibility of access for distance learning.

Optional attendance session in the UCD Anatomy Dissection Laboratory.

Accommodates professionals in full time employment through flexible e-learning environment.

This module is open to all health care and associated professionals who encounter cross sectional imaging on a regular basis.

Skills and Knowledge

This module will provide the student with a comprehensive knowledge of normal cross sectional human anatomy of the head, neck and trunk. The modalities of Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in particular will be used in correlation with cadaveric cross sections to acquaint students with normal and some abnormal anatomy as seen clinically. This module will be delivered mostly via electronic learning.


Teaching and Learning

Module participants will profit from using a fully online e-Learing module, which incorporates lectures, multimedia and online discussions as well as self-directed learning. The teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage autonomous reflective practitioners who can further develop their personal and professional skills within a supportive framework.

Prof Cert Radiation Safety – online – ONE SEMESTER

Course Features

Covers contemporary radiation safety issues for industry, medical and biomedical applications.

Introduces radiation workers to the principles of the physics of radiation safety and the application of these principles.

Provides the necessary tools for those who will become trainers in radiation protection and in the safe use of radiation sources in their profession.

Course Overview

The course will be divided into 10 sections, all of which will be delivered via online learning methods.  This course will attract participants from a variety of backgrounds and training. Radiation Safety Officers are employed in the medical, biomedical and industrial sectors, and professional training is required by law.


Subject areas:

Introduction to fundamental concepts

Units of radiation exposure and dose

Biological effects of ionising radiation

Radiation detection and measurement

Legal issues and international framework in radiation safety

Assessment of internal and external exposures

Protection against occupational exposure

Emergency planning; non-ionising radiation

Each student will also choose a specialty from either diagnostic radiography, radiation therapy or industrial applications of ionising radiation depending on their area of interest.

This new course is the latest addition to the UCD Diagnostic Imaging professional training portfolio. It has been designed specifically for health and social care professionals with the relevant skills and knowledge that will enable them to understand the varied presentations of non-accidental injury.  This programme delivers a combination of teaching and learning methods to suit full-time professional practitioners.


Knowledge and Understanding

Demonstrate a detailed professional knowledge from a professional’s perspective  of their role relating to Non Accidental Injury in paediatric patients.

Debate current research and practice within a forensic setting, highlighting the value of each professional’s contribution.

Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the roles of other professionals and the impact this may have on the radiographer when imaging paediatric patients with suspected Non Accidental Injury.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding:

Demonstrate a detailed professional knowledge from a professional’s perspective of the legal concepts and processes that underpin factors associated with Non Accidental Injury.

Apply current research and practice within a forensic setting in relation to paediatric examination and care.

Demonstrate an ability to recognise the psychological and physical capabilities of patients presenting with suspected Non Accidental Injuries  and the importance of appropriate response  strategies to their individual needs.

Making Judgments:

Critically reflect upon their own current practice and their role in a forensic setting.

Critically evaluate their ability to handle multifaceted issues  in which judgments are made whilst reflecting upon the wider professional issues and the responsibilities of their role as a professional within this area.

Communication and Writing Skills:

Develop professional competencies by integrating clinical skills with theoretical clinical knowledge to enhance their applied research and communication skills within the topic area and the material explored.

Demonstrate ability to source and critically analyse relevant literature.

Prof Cert Child Protection – ONE SEMESTER

Course Overview

The module aims to develop skills and knowledge to allow multi-disciplinary staff to better understand the varied roles and responsibilities of professionals relative to all aspects of Child Protection in a clinical setting. This course has been designed to provide theoretical background with a significant emphasis on clinical experience and relevance.

Prof Dip Child Protection – 12 months

Course in Context

This course will equip students with the skills required to engage in their statutory responsibilities under the new legislation relating to the protection and welfare of children. The course offers an immersive, innovative blended learning curriculum facilitating   transferable   skills including team work, communication, a self-directed   flexible approach to learning and problem solving and applied research delivered by both face to face and on line learning in a supportive learning environment. Students have a variety of options including the possibility to progress through the programme in a staged approach by building on their Professional Certificate before undertaking a Graduate Certificate and subsequent Graduate Diploma programme at a later date.

The course offers an interdisciplinary perspective and focuses upon areas such as child protection and clinical supervision. Assessments are based on the application of specific child protection and welfare competencies as applied to the students own area of relevant work.

Course Overview


This course prepares students from health, social care and other services who interact with children to develop skills in relation to child welfare and protection within their organisation.

Students have the option of first undertaking a Professional Certificate before progressing to the Professional Diploma programme. The programme aims to build upon and advance the students existing repertoire of knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional responsibilities in relation to child protection and welfare. Modules are focussed on legal responsibilities, case management and the influencing context of the inherent challenges within this field.

The programme is structured to accommodate work requirements of students and is delivered through a mixture of blended learning and face to face delivery. Full support is given by academic staff, educational technologist and administrative staff.
